Janaki C. Samaraweera, M.D., received board-certification through the American Board of Family Medicine. She performed a geriatrics fellowship at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, 2019 to 2020. She completed a family medicine residency at DeTar University in Victoria, Texas, in 2019, and earned her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine Grenada, West Indies, in 2011. Her father, an OB/GYN physician in the community, worked at Halifax Hospital, the local Public Health Department, and with Dr. Gohar Khan in South Daytona, Florida. After college, Dr. Samaraweera shadowed and worked with Dr. Gohar Khan as well. Highlights of her research include “Implementation of the Continuous glucose monitoring system to improve glycemic control and management,” Dr. Mark Stevens, Victoria TX; “Diabetes and Heart Disease, GAP (Guideline Applied in Practice) Objective in Improving Patient care in an out-patient setting by implementing AHA guidelines for improving the management of diabetes and reducing cardiovascular complications,” Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine. Her published research includes Abstract: “The Role and Influence of Culture in End of Life Care, The Society of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care,” Medicine Annual Meeting and the American Geriatric Society Annual Meeting; Journal of Clinical Hypertension, “Rate and Predictors of Blood Pressure Control in a Federal Qualified Health Center in Michigan: A Huge Concern?” Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine, Lansing, Michigan (Bibliography upon request). Dr. Samaraweera organized and assisted in developing the United Methodist Free Clinic in Victoria, Texas, the community’s first resident-run clinic. She enjoys meditation, running, and traveling.
